The exhibition Responses to Nature at the CAA gallery in Marylebone highlights new work by three of our maker members – glass artist Helen Slater, jeweller Laura Ngyou and potter Nick Membery.

The natural world has always been a source of inspiration for artists and an increasing number of makers strive to live in harmony with the environment that surrounds them, whether it is rural or urban. In Responses to Nature we present new work by three makers whose practice is informed by a constant dialogue with landscape. They share a fascination with natural sciences which they expertly use in their work.

Helen Slater creates sketches of familiar fields and woodlands in free-standing three-dimensional cast glass sculptures. In this show, Slater is also showing new lens-based pieces developed as part of her PhD at the Royal College of Art.

The textures and surfaces of Laura Ngyou’s precious jewellery emulate miniature worlds found within the natural landscape, from exotic jungle flora to humble rockpools. Her recent work remains experimental, whilst focusing on intricate growth patterns, refined by the addition of geometric form and structure.

Based in rural Carmarthenshire, Wales, Nick Membery uses found, local wood and clay as raw materials for his quietly beautiful stoneware pots. With his newest small batch range, Membery’s focus lies on exploring a limited range of glazes and slips.

Responses to Nature is part of London Craft Week, 30.09.20 – 10.10.20.
