Dreams and Nightmares is a continued exploration into my relationship with depression and specifically my constant awe at how the human mind is capable of creating such incredible highs and devestating lows, articulated perfectly by Carl Sagan’s quote

‘You’re capable of such beautiful dreams and such horrible nightmares’

The dichotomy is presented by the contrast between the scorched and textured Ash base with checks, splits and natural defects laid bare, and the pale Sycamore and brass house rising above. The stilts and natural cracks in the base serve to give a sense of the unease and anxiety, that instability between a high or low mood.

Within the house stands a textured aluminium moon, representing one’s hopes and dreams, cocooned from the darkness below by the building. Above the house flies a brass flag, serving to raise awareness of mental health issues and as a reminder that often all it takes is to check in and talk.
