Janet Hinchliffe McCutcheon is an established jewellery artist working from her studio in North Yorkshire.

Following her degree in Jewellery & Silversmithing in 1977 at Loughborough College of Art & Design Janet soon found her means of expression in making jewellery pieces as wearable objects. This purpose has remained a constant in her work with jewellery that makes a statement.

Her designs develop through the process of making which in turn stimulates new ideas and subtle variations of form and surfaces. She enjoys paring down designs to comprise essential elements that contrast bold strong rigid forms in silver and wood with flexible, delicate use of paper and textiles.

Janet has represented her work at a number of leadings exhibitions including ‘Origin’ at Somerset House London; ‘Goldsmiths Fair’ Goldsmiths Hall, London; ‘Dazzle’ National Theatre London; Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair Manchester; Made London; Craft Festival, Bovey Tracy Devon & ‘Sierrad’ Amsterdam. At these exhibitions she promotes new work and sells to private collectors.

Her collections have featured in numerous galleries and exhibitions in the UK and overseas including Billcliffe Gallery Glasgow, Scotland,  Awon Crafts Gallery Seoul, S. Korea and ‘Masters & Protegees’ Itami and Tokyo, Japan.

She is a member of Contemporary Applied Arts, London.

Janet co- established the UK Association for Contemporary Jewellery a forum for communication and collaboration between artists, galleries, curators and collectors.

She contributed to this her knowledge and contacts from European artists and galleries in the field of Art Jewellery. Her participation in jewellery conferences and events she sees as an important part of wider communication and collaboration.

In 2015 she was invited as Jeweller in Residence at Mima (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) and Teesside University. The two year Arts Council funded project was to develop interpretations and public engagement with the Mima International Collection of Contemporary Jewellery. Mima have her work in their collection.

Throughout her career she has maintained a balance between making, educational practice and research. She has inspired a younger generation of artists and designers through her 23 years teaching at Northumbria University, School of Design.

Her work with students in research, design realisation and as external examiner for MA Design at University of Lincoln contributed to student motivation and progression of design perception.
