Tipping Point was created during the UKs second Coronavirus lockdown using offcut materials.

Building on Coronavirus: Isolation, Tipping Point continues Sandy’s exploration into crises facing society, this time specifically mental health. Exacerbated by the pandemic and lockdowns, mental health had already been a rising global issue. Anxiety and depression are on the rise as we are constantly bombarded with doom and gloom media, social networks, political instability and increasing pressure on our work/life.

Tipping point set out to explore mental health from my Sandy’s own personal experience with depression, visualising some of the internal feelings and their external expression into what often feels like a broken and unforgiving world.

Each element has meaning in itself, hopes and dreams, flying the flag, sanctuary, strength through support, stormy and uncertain waters, balance, but together they represent the daily fluctuations of mood. In balance but easily tipped out of kilter.

The kinetic aspect of the sculpture allows the crescent to be placed at any point on the slope whilst remaining in balance, a visual tool to express internal mood.
